BRAINSPOTTING

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with BioLateral sound, which is deep, direct, powerful yet focused and containing.

Brainspotting identifies activated eye positions designated as Brainspots. Located through either one or both eyes, Brainspots are observed from either the “Inside Window” of the clients felt sense and/or the “Outside Window” of the clients’ reflexive responses (i.e., blink, eye twitches or wobbles, pupil dilation, quick breaths and subtle body shifts). Students will first learn the phenomenological approach that underpins strategies for Brainspotting, followed by strategies for identifying and processing Brainspots. Attention will be given to the utilization and integration of Brainspotting into ongoing treatment, including highly dissociative clients.

Brainspotting is adaptable to almost all areas of specialization. Brainspotting provides therapists with powerful tools to enable their patients to quickly and effectively process through the deep brain sources of many held traumas, emotional, somatic and performance problems.

  • Brainspotting is a physiological approach with psychological results.

  • As a therapeutic model it lends itself to getting at material we often cannot reach through words.

  • Brainspotting is a powerful and focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neuro-physiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation, and a variety of challenging symptoms.

  • It is an offshoot of EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy processes. Brainspotting was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2002 and identifies activated eye positions which correspond with the issue of disturbance.

  • Brainspotting works deep within the limbic system of the brain (deep into the lower mid-brain).

  • Clients can process bodily responses to an incident with or without words.

  • Each person’s experience will be different and what happens can be unexpected.

  • Brainspotting encourages no assumptions and no judgments, and works on the belief that each person is unique and has the innate capacity to heal themselves.

  • The therapist is trained to track what emerges during Brainspotting sessions.

  • It is the client’s inner wisdom that guides the process.

  • Brainspottting is an approach that utilizes focused mindfulness.

  • Brainspotting can be extremely effective in treating emotional and stress-related physical conditions, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

  • Hypothetically, a “Brainspot” is activity in the brain and body in response to focus and eye position. It is based on the understanding that “where we look affects how we feel”.

  • A Brainspot is a physiological capsule holding emotional experience in memory form, like a time capsule. Eye positions can find the time capsule locations and hold the brain’s focus on it. When the brain focuses on a trauma capsule, that trauma begins to release, allowing you to feel it and then return to a state of homeostasis.

Brainspotting is a physiological therapeutic tool which can be integrated into a wide range of healing modalities, including psychological, as well as somatic approaches to treatment. Brainspotting can be useful as a complement to various body-based therapies including advanced bodywork, chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, nursing, medicine, and other specialized approaches to physical healing. It is a valuable resource in the treatment of varying medical, physical, and psycho-emotional issues and symptoms encountered by health professionals.

Brainspotting provides a neurobiological tool for accessing, diagnosing, and treating a multitude of somatic and emotionally-based conditions.

Consent Form for Brainspotting Therapy

I acknowledge that I have thoroughly read the informational handout regarding Brainspotting therapy given to me by my therapist. I understand that Brainspotting is a neurophysiological treatment tool that can help my child alleviate various somatic and emotionally-based conditions.

I have also had the opportunity to ask any questions I have about the technique, and have had any questions I have either answered by my therapist, or have been provided a resource to obtain that answer. I have been made aware that when a Brainspot is stimulated during therapy, typically out of conscious awareness, my child may experience reflexive and physical responses. There are a multitude of reflexive responses possible including eye twitches, wobbles, freezes, blinks, narrowing, facial tics, brow furrowing, sniffs, swallows, yawns, coughs, head nods, hand signals, foot movement, and body shifts. Reflexive facial expressions are powerful indicators of Brainspots. I am aware that the appearance of a reflexive response, as I attend to the somatosensory (body/sensory) experience of the emotional, somatic or traumatic issue, is a normal indication that a Brainspot has been located and activated. I understand these responses indicate the stimulation of the Brainspot, and that with mindful focus on the Brainspot, that this initiates the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself from trauma.

As with other brain-body psychotherapies, engaging in therapy has both benefits and risks. Potential benefits include a reduction in negative emotional states such as anxiety, anger, sadness, depression, and loneliness. Other potential benefits include feeling more connected to oneself and the ability to engage with the world in a healthy way.

Risks may include experiencing distressing or unpleasant feelings, such as sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, frustration, loneliness, and other emotions during and sometimes after the Brainspotting session. I understand that I will keep open communication with my therapist about my experiences and needs, and we will use this collaborative approach to inform my treatment plan. I understand that there are no guarantees about results. I acknowledge that therapy will require my active participation with my therapist and the therapeutic process.

I acknowledge my signed consent has not been the result of coercion, and is a signature of my desire to address my child’s symptoms through the use of Brainspotting, a neurobiological tool for accessing, diagnosing, and treating somatic and emotionally-based conditions. I understand that I can start or stop Brainspotting treatment at any time.
